Understanding Scores

How risk scores are structured, what the numbers mean, and how to interpret results.

The 0-10 scale

Natural peril scores and the Overall Property Score use a 0-10 scale. A higher number indicates higher risk. The scale is calibrated so that a score reflects relative risk compared to similar US properties.

Six natural perils + standalone crime context

PerilScore evaluates every property against six natural hazard perils. Each peril is scored independently based on location-specific data. Crime is shown separately as underwriting context and does not drive the Overall Property Score.

Hurricane

Wind speed exposure, storm track history, and coastal proximity. Primarily relevant to Gulf Coast and Atlantic coastal regions.

Tornado

Historical tornado frequency and intensity by geographic cell. Risk is highest in the central plains and southeastern US.

Hail

Hail event frequency and average hail size. Greatest exposure is found across the Great Plains and Midwest.

Wildfire

Proximity to fire-prone vegetation and historical fire event data. Highest risk is in western and parts of southeastern states.

Flood

Proximity to water bodies, elevation, and flood zone classifications. Riverine and coastal flood data are both considered.

Earthquake

Seismic hazard based on ground shaking potential and fault proximity. High-risk zones are concentrated in the western US and the central New Madrid Seismic Zone.

Crime

Standalone underwriting context for the property's area. Crime is not a driver of the Overall Property Score.

Protection score

Protection is scored from 1-10 based on fire-response protection. Unlike the risk scores above, lower is stronger.

The Overall Property Score

The Overall Property Score shown at the top of premium reports is a holistic property score. It starts with applicable location peril scores, then applies bounded adjustments for construction, roof characteristics, building age, occupancy, fire protection, nearby exposures, and imagery findings. Free previews continue to show individual peril scores while this premium score is locked.

When a peril shows as not applicable

Not every peril applies to every location. When a peril is not applicable, you will see a short explanation rather than a numeric score. This is not a data gap -- it means our data confirms there is no significant exposure for that hazard at that location. Examples:

  • -Hurricane: Not in hurricane zone. Properties far from the Gulf or Atlantic coasts are not in a meaningful hurricane exposure zone.
  • -Earthquake: Low seismic activity. Most of the central and eastern US outside the New Madrid zone has negligible seismic hazard.
  • -Flood: Not in flood zone. No significant flood exposure was detected at the property's elevation and location.
