Guides and answers for using PerilScore

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

What is a PerilScore used for?

PerilScore is used by insurance professionals, agents, brokers, and underwriters to quickly assess the natural hazard risk of a property before binding coverage or presenting a quote. It provides a consistent, data-driven view of risk across all six major natural perils in a matter of seconds.

How accurate are the scores?

Scores are based on a combination of historical event data, geographic modeling, and property-level data sourced from public records. They reflect relative risk at the property's location and are designed to be directionally accurate for screening and triage purposes. They should not be treated as a replacement for a full engineering inspection or a detailed actuarial analysis.

Why does a peril show as not applicable?

When a peril is marked not applicable, it means the property's location falls outside the geographic area where that hazard presents meaningful risk. For example, a property in the Midwest will not show a hurricane score because it has no hurricane exposure. The not-applicable label is a definitive assessment, not a data gap.

What does the Overall Property Score represent?

The Overall Property Score is a premium underwriter-style score on the 0-10 scale. It starts with the applicable location peril scores, then adjusts them with property-specific signals such as construction, roof, year built, occupancy, fire protection, adjacent exposures, and imagery findings. Individual peril scores remain location-based and visible separately.

Can I score a commercial property?

Yes. PerilScore works with both residential and commercial US addresses. Commercial properties will return scores for the same six natural perils, with crime shown separately as underwriting context. COPE data availability varies by property type -- some commercial properties may have richer data than others depending on public record availability in that jurisdiction.

Is COPE data always available?

COPE data is sourced from public property records and is available for most US residential and commercial addresses. However, coverage varies by county and state. Some rural addresses or recently constructed properties may have limited or missing data in the public record. When data is not available for a specific field, that field is simply omitted from the report rather than showing an incorrect value.

How many scores can I create?

The number of scores you can create depends on your plan. Usage resets monthly. You can view your current usage and plan details in Settings. If you need higher volume, contact us to discuss options.

Do shared reports expire?

Shared report links are persistent as long as your account is active. There is no built-in expiration for shared links. If you need to revoke access to a shared report, contact support.

Can I embed PerilScore in my own website or application?

Yes. PerilScore offers a widget embed that can be added to any webpage using a short snippet of code. Visit the Developer section of your account to find your embed code and setup instructions. The widget shows the risk scores for a specific property in a compact format.
